The West spends the most on household furnishings, with annual expenditures averaging $3,037 per household. States in the West also saw the most household expenditure growth over the last five years, exceeding 32%.
While housing in the western United States is often expensive, the wages also tend to be higher. This could indicate that those living in the Western region may have higher budgets for decor. California, for example, has some of the most expensive housing markets in the country. Many neighborhoods are made up of high-end real estate, with substantial funds often being invested in the aesthetic of homes.
California decor styles often adopt a relaxed, boho-inspired style, with light and airy rooms, unexpected color palettes, and quirky patterns. Many Californians like to incorporate eccentric accents, such as grand-scale wall art. The high demand for luxury artwork likely also contributes to the high average spend on home decor in the region.
The Northeast region recorded the second-highest expenditure on home furnishings, at $2,727 per household. Over the last five years, household expenditures rose from $2,250 to $2,727 - an increase of around one-fifth (21.2%). Northeastern states include Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
Top-spending states in the region include New York, renowned as a global style hub. Popular decor styles in the state include the use of industrial and raw materials, neutral color palettes, and oversized artwork. As New York homes can be small, especially apartments in the city, residents often utilize creative and decorative storage solutions, like floating shelves
In third place is the Midwest, with homeowners there spending around $2,442 on furnishings per household each year. In 2019, Midwest customers spent $1,951 on furnishings, which rose to $2,442 in 2023 - an increase of a quarter (25.17%). Some of these top-spending states include Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Illinois.
In Illinois, interior design trends are influenced by Chicago’s architecture and often include mid-century elements such as weathered wood, exposed brick, metal appliances, and concrete flooring. Some of the most popular real estate in Chicago is located in refurbished manufacturing districts featuring brick walls, exposed pipes, and tall windows.
The South recorded the lowest annual expenditure on home decor, averaging $2,146 per household. Five years ago, Southern homeowners spent $1,993 on home furnishings each year, rising to $2,146 in 2023. Despite being at the lower end of the scale nationally, some top spenders in the South include Texas, Louisiana, and Florida.
Louisiana homeowners are increasingly showing interest in sustainable materials and procedures, like using natural wood accents to add a touch of rustic charm. Whereas just a few states over, in Georgia, industrial chic is a popular interior design concept. It usually features a neutral color palette, raw materials, and sleek detailing.
