We're on a mission to make custom framing more convenient, intuitive and affordable.
We do this by bringing the entire purchase experience online, handcrafting each frame to museum standards, and providing amazing customer support.
Online framing is relatively new and still unfamiliar to many people. We're frequently asked how it works, as well as how Level Frames compares to Framebridge, another online picture framing site.
When you order a custom picture frame through Level for a print or poster you have on hand, one main difference versus Framebridge is our ability to handcraft the frame to your exact specifications, ship it out within a few days and include everything you need to mount the artwork on your own at home - a 15 to 20 minute DIY project.
This is a great way to save time otherwise spent at the post office or waiting for a mailer to arrive. And you don't have to send away items that are sentimental or irreplaceable.
However, if you'd rather have us frame for you, we'll coordinate receiving your items, complete the framing in our studio and send everything back ready-to-hang.
If you select the In Studio option, we'll even provide a pre-paid mailing label, or if necessary send over a tube or flatpack you can use to package up your items. It's incredibly rare that an item gets damage or lost in transit, but if anything does happen you are covered for loss up to $300 per order.
For any given framing project, simply select whichever method is more convenient for each item you would like to frame.
Of course, if you are framing a photo stored on your phone or computer, it's even easier! Simply upload the image, and we'll provide a range of print sizes you can choose from, cropping and AI enhancement options, and even different paper types.
Select your ideal print size, customize the frame style to your exact liking and check out. We'll ship your museum-quality, handcrafted framed photo right to your door within a few business days.
Several things set us apart from Framebridge here:
1) We can accommodate larger files sizes (up to 300MB and over 125 megapixels) as well as TIFF files. Framebridge can only handle 12,000 pixels on the longest side and a max file size of 30MB).
2) We offer four acrylic options on every frame, Standard framers' grade, UV-protection, Non-glare UV and Optium Museum Plexi, so that you can tailor your piece based on your exact needs and budget. The New York Times referenced our acrylic options as something to always consider when you framing artwork or photos.
3) Since the paper type can also impact how your framed photo looks, we offer different paper types: Lustre (slightly glossy with a subtle, pearl-like texture), Archival Matte (little to no glare for a more classic artistic look), and Watercolor Paper (100% cotton, with a subtle eggshell texture that adds depth to photographs and fine art prints).
No matter what you are framing, instead of a grid view of frame choices or a multi-step set of hoops to jump through, we give you all of the controls to visualize and choose the exact frame style, profile width, mat color, mat width and even the type of acrylic that best suits your artwork, all on one screen.
We believe this is the best way to design a frame that perfectly fits your artwork or photo and matches your taste.

Not sure about which frame color or matting width to use?
We've built guidance into the controls, such as the ability to upload an image of your artwork inside the frame, as well as a "Golden Ratio" button that suggests a balanced frame and mat width based on the size of your print (look for the lighting bolt icon next to the mat slider).
We've streamlined the interface and number of choices so that you won't get overwhelmed, but we also have an "Advanced Options" section if you are looking for something specific such as an 8-ply mat, bottom weighted or other asymmetrical matting, more mat colors, and even float mounting. It's almost everything you would find in a high end custom frame shop, but with a process designed for beginners and experts alike.
In Buzzfeed's review of online framed photos, Level Frames was chosen as the clear winner above Framebridge and others. From the article:
"Level Frames ticked just about every box, starting (most importantly) with price point. Coming in at just under $80, this was the second-most affordable option of the bunch. But think about it: Paying nearly $20 more for essentially the exact same level of quality is ridiculous. Why would anyone do that? Level Frames offered more options to choose from for image size, frame style, and matting. It felt like you could really fine-tune the frame to some very specific preferences. We’ll chalk up the super-quick turnaround time to the geographic proximity of the company, but even if it took a full week it would still have been worth it. Now get framing!"
By cutting out any middlemen and producing everything under one roof, we are able to offer premium framing for a fraction of what you would pay at a high-end custom frame shop.
The size of your artwork or photo helps determine the final price of your custom frame. But in our experience, there are wide differences in manufacturing cost based on the final frame specs you select. A 16" x 20" poster in a simple, black 3/4" wide profile should cost you less than the same print framed with a thicker profile, 3.5" of matting and premium non-glare acrylic.
With Framebridge, you are given a price for a frame with substantial matting that increases the overall frame size and materials, but if you want frame to your photo full bleed without any matting, your price stays the same.
Our frames carry a much lower starting price than what you'll find at Framebridge, and only go up slightly if you add more matting or a premium acrylic like Optium Museum Plexi.
Frame prices as of 11/04/2024. Shipping costs may vary, add $25 for In-Studio framing when sending us up to 3 items.

We own and operate a small fleet of high-end, professional grade ink jet printers, led by several brand new Epson SureColor P9000s.
When you upload a photo for us to print and frame, we analyze the aspect ratio and resolution on the fly to generate a range of acceptable print sizes to choose from. You can also choose between a lustre paper that is slightly glossy, an archival fine art matte paper that has a flat, texturized finish with little to no glare, and a watercolor paper that has even more texture.
Once a selection is made and your order placed, our software will resample the image up to 300 DPI for a super high-quality print.
At this stage, we can see onscreen the exact print quality of each photo for the size ordered. If we spot any pixellation or noise, we will reach out immediately to request a higher resolution file or suggest a smaller print size. Once the photos are printed, they must pass a second eye test before we turn them into framed photos and send them your way.
You can see the entire process come together in the following short video that follows a framed photo from printing all the way to making its way onto the wall.
Reach out if you have any questions about the resolution of a photo or its max print size. We also offer image editing and retouching by special request.
